Low Scoring Affair Leads Lady Bearcats to First Conference Loss
OWENSBORO, KY – The Brescia University women’s basketball team dropped their first conference matchup against IU-Southeast with a final score of 39-38. The Lady Bearcats extend their overall record to 4-4 and an RSC record of 0-1.
In this low scoring affair, Elise Williams would get the Bearcats on the board early with an and-1 layup in the paint. Raquel Crooke-Losada would make it a five-point lead for BU on her layup past defenders. Turnovers began to riddle both offenses as the next score wouldn't be until the 5:30 mark. IU-Southeast broke the scoring drought with a three-pointer, cutting the Bearcat lead by two. The Grenadiers would score 10 unanswered points to take the lead going into the second quarter. BU came out with a new strategy to face the Grenadier offense as they started to connect on their 9-0 run to take back the lead. The IUS offense came roaring back in the final two minutes as they took a 21-18 lead going into the half.
Only 23 points were scored total in the third quarter as IUS continued to hold a six-point lead. A clutch three by Malyea Partinger would get the Bearcats within four of the lead as Elise Williams cuts it down to two on her jumpshot. With a minute and a half left, and down by three, Lindsey Peyton would get a wide-open look under the basket to give the Bearcats just a one-point disadvantage. Madelyn Lyon would continue to clean the glass as her put-back layup kept BU within one of the Grenadier lead. With 10 seconds left in regulation, Raquel Crooke-Losada would put up a desperation three-pointer that barely missed the rim as the Grenadiers take the win, 39-38.
Elise Williams led the team with 11 points on 4-7 shooting from the field. Lindsey Peyton followed closely behind with eight points and 16 rebounds while Madelyn Lyon added 14 rebounds of her own.
The Lady Bearcats take the court again in Midway, KY as they face conference opponent Midway Saturday, Dec. 2 with a tip-off time of 12pm.
