Bearcats’ Sweep Falls Short in Final Innings to KWC
OWENSBORO, KY. – The Brescia University softball team fell to cross-town rival, Kentucky Wesleyan, in two game series Tuesday night cap. The Bearcats extend their overall record to 6-12 on the season while their conference record remains at 3-7.
As we start off in game one against the D-II powerhouse, both teams would remain scoreless in the first inning. The Panthers would start the bottom of the second inning with a 2-run homerun that bounced off the top of the fence. With the 2-run advantage, the Panthers would add on to that lead in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to five. The Bearcat offense began to adjust in the fourth inning as Kaylyn Sowders would start the rally with a double to right center. Mikah Goeppner would follow up with a double of her own as she advances to third on a throwing error by the centerfielder to plate BU's first run of the game. The designated player, Madison Ladd, would sneak a single through the right side of the field to score Goeppner from third to surge the comeback. A costly error by the Wesleyan third baseman would put a runner on first for the Bearcats to extend the inning. With two outs, Lindsey Peyton would send a double to left field to score Kaley Harris from first base. Courtney Peyton would single through the left side to score Lindsey from second for the fourth and final run of the inning.
The Bearcats would tack on three more runs in the sixth inning as they take the lead against the Panthers, 7-4. Raini Gerometta would keep the Panthers scoreless through five innings as Hannah Hailey came in for relief. The Bearcats would add two more runs in the top of the seventh to hold a five-run lead. Unfortunately, the Panthers would walk it off on a single to center field to take the game with a final score of 10-9.
Game two would prove just as exciting as the first as the Panthers would strike first with a three run first inning. The Panthers would eventually add two more to their lead in the bottom of the third inning to extend the lead to five again. A single up the middle in the top of the fourth by Zoe Smithson would start a three-run inning. Smithson would get herself into scoring position as she steals second base and then advances to third on a wild pitch. Kaylyn Sowders would reach on a fielder's choice and advance to second as Mikah Goeppner would follow up with a single up the middle to clear the bases for the Bearcats. Kaley Harris would double to right center to plate the third run of the inning for BU to get them with striking distance of the lead. Errors by the Panther defense would knot the score at five for the Bearcats in the top of the fifth. Going into the seventh inning, the score would stay at seven a piece to send this game into extras. Despite taking the lead by one in the top of the eighth, the Bearcats could not hold the Panther offense off as a walk-off homerun would send the Bearcats home in heartbreak.
