FRIDAY NIGHT: Brescia 3, Midway 0
(25–10, 25–19, 25–21)
Brescia opened the weekend with a commanding sweep over Midway, delivering one of their cleanest and most efficient offensive performances of the season.
Efficient Offense Leads the Way
The Bearcats hit a scorching .519 in Set 1, .433 in Set 2, and .308 in Set 3, completely dictating rhythm and tempo from the first whistle.
Key Offensive Standouts
-
Remi Pit — 7 kills on .583 hitting; unstoppable efficiency on the pin
-
Mustafa Yildiz — dominant 10 kills on .625, a major presence in the middle/right
-
Setter William Hernandez — 18 assists while steering an offense firing on all cylinders
Defensive Backbone Shines
The sweep wasn't just about hitting — it was about controlling the floor.
-
Miguel Veloso (#5) delivered a strong defensive outing, digging 12 balls in just three sets, stabilizing serve‑receive and anchoring back‑row coverage when momentum threatened to swing.
-
Stephen Schmidt (#27) contributed steady ball control and precision passing across his rotations, helping Brescia consistently run its offense in tempo (season: 17 matches played, 60 sets, 6 digs vs IU East as well).
With first‑contact excellence leading the way, Brescia imposed its style throughout the night.
Alternate Setter Contribution
While Hernandez quarterbacked the Midway match, alternate setter Finn Berger continues to be a major contributor this season, already amassing 340 assists over 72 sets, one of the highest totals on the roster. His ability to enter matches seamlessly and maintain Brescia's offensive tempo has been critical to the team's expanding depth.
SATURDAY AFTERNOON: IU East 3, Brescia 1
(18–25, 25–18, 32–30, 25–18)
Saturday brought a tougher test as IU East used late‑set execution to outlast the Bearcats in four competitive sets.
Strong Start, Narrow Breaks
Brescia opened with a composed .333 hitting performance in Set 1 but struggled in Set 2 as IU East responded with pressure from the service line and strong pin attacks.
The marathon 32–30 Set 3 — featuring long defensive rallies and heavy swings on both sides — proved to be the afternoon's turning point.
Bearcat Leaders
-
Malo Vandewalle — 12 kills, 10 digs; a complete two‑way performance
-
Ben Zerwes — 7 kills; efficient and steady in the middle
-
Remi Pit — 6 kills on 27 swings while facing constant defensive attention
-
Mustafa Yildiz — 8 Kills and a 2.94 Hitting efficiency average
Defensive Specialists Step Up Again
Despite the loss, Brescia's back‑row group left its mark:
-
Stephen Schmidt tied for the team lead with 6 digs, maintaining high‑quality first contact that gave Brescia chances to extend rallies in critical moments.
-
Miguel Veloso added 10 digs, continuing his weekend of steady serve‑receive and hard‑nosed floor defense, helping Brescia weather numerous IU East service runs and transition swings.
Setter Rotation Continues to Provide Value
Though Hernandez ran most of Saturday's offense, alternate setter Finn Berger added 21 assists of his own during the IU East match, showing once again that Brescia has true two‑setter versatility when needed.
BIGGER PICTURE: Identity, Underdog Mentality & Playoff Urgency
Picked to finish 7th in the RSC, the Bearcats have instead surged to No. 33 nationally (NAIA) — a testament to growth, grit, and a roster packed with emerging talent
Why Brescia Remains Dangerous
Season statistics confirm a team built to compete deep into March:
-
Vandewalle — 207 total points to lead the roster
-
Pit — 133 kills, 156.5 points; a volume scorer on the pin
-
Pereira & Zerwes — over 160 combined kills from the middle positions
-
Berger & Hernandez — 653 combined assists running the 5–1/6–2 hybrid look
-
Veloso & Schmidt — two of the team's most reliable passers, combining consistency, energy, and ball control that keeps Brescia competitive even against elite-serving teams
-
Yildiz — who rakes as a conference leader (#4 Respectively in both) in hitting efficiency .352 and blocks per set with 1.24
The Bearcats are not simply chasing a playoff berth — they are building a postseason identity built on first‑contact quality, setter depth, and an offense capable of erupting at any moment.
LOOKING AHEAD
With key matchups looming against Campbellsville, Georgetown, and Cumberland, Brescia's playoff destiny remains firmly within reach. If the Bearcats blend Friday's precision with Saturday's resilience — supported by elite back‑row defense and a flexible, two‑setter engine — they can seize their postseason opportunity.
