Men's Volleyball Goes 2-2 on the Week Including First Conference Win

OWENSBORO, Ky. - The Brescia University men’s volleyball team went 2-2 last week with wins over Culver-Stockton and Rio Grande. The Bearcats beat Rio in their second meeting of the year as they earned their first Mid-South Conference win. The Bearcats extended their record to 4-13 overall and 1-3 in MSC play.

OWENSBORO, Ky. - The Brescia University men's volleyball team went 2-2 last week with wins over Culver-Stockton and Rio Grande. The Bearcats beat Rio in their second meeting of the year as they earned their first Mid-South Conference win. The Bearcats extended their record to 4-13 overall and 1-3 in MSC play.  

The Bearcats started their week on the road at (RV) Missouri Baptist for a tri-match against the Spartans and Culver-Stockton. BU went 1-1 on the day as they took the 3-1 loss to Mo.Bap. and then bounced back to beat the Wildcats of Culver-Stockton in the same fashion. The Bearcats took a quick 7-1 lead over the Wildcats in set one until Culver-Stockton answered back with a five-point run of their own. Both teams locked horns as the Wildcats took the lead by one. The Bearcats were able to keep Culver-Stockton at bay as they won set one, 25-22. The Wildcats didn't make set two easy on the Bearcats as BU took set two, 25-23, as they took a set two advantage. Culver-Stockton bounced back from getting swept in the third as BU fell in set three, 26-24. To avoid a fifth set contest, the Bearcats needed to get the win in set four.  

Quickly down 12-6 to the Wildcats, a four-point turn around for the Bearcats diminished the Wildcat lead to just three on three Mustafa Yildiz kills. An attack error by CSC would knot the score at 15. Each team traded points on the scoreboard as they tried to extend the match. Back-to-back kills by Owen Collitt and Meric Akovali secured the win for the Bearcats as they won their highest scoring set of the year with a final score of 32-30. Akovali and Yildiz led the Bearcats with a combined 31 kills as Collitt added 12 of his own.  

The Bearcat's third loss in conference came at the hands of #9 Georgetown in a three-set affair. BU countered the loss with their first win in conference against Rio Grande in three sets. Despite losing to the Red Storm earlier in the season, BU took advantage of the rematch to win in three sets with final scores of 25-20, 25-22, and 25-23. Tuna Konukcu led the Bearcats with 14 kills as Yildiz finished with 10. Akovali assisted his fellow Bearcats 28 times.  

Next up, the Bearcats head to Cumberland University to take on the Eutectics of UHSP this Friday, Mar. 15th with a 7pm CT tip-off.
