Alderton Leads Bearcats to Second Place Finish
The Brescia women's cross country team opened the 2021 season at the IU East Run With the Wolves Invitational, placing second overall.
The Bearcats competed on a tough course in Richmond, Indiana, which features several rolling hills and turns.
The team was led by Breanna Alderton (JR/Owensboro, KY), who won the challenging 5k race with a time of 19:12. Alderton's win signifies the first win for a Brescia XC athlete since the 2013-2014 season, when alumna Embra Hawkins won the Midway Invitational.
Freshmen Carmela Shorkey (FR/Macomb, MI) and Katlyn Varnadore (FR/Brighton, TN) were the next Bearcats to cross the finish line, placing 12th and 14th with times of 22:27 and 22:30, respectively.
Hailey Vitolo (JR/Perry, OH) and Abagale Huelsman (JR/Fort Branch, IN) rounded out the top five for the Bearcats, placing 15th and 17th with times of 22:51 and 23:11, respectively.
The Bearcats had all five scorers finish in the top 20 of the meet.
Sheyenna Stytz (SO/Ledbetter, KY), Marianne Glaziner (JR/Terre Haute, IN), and Morgan Curry (SO/Hawesville, KY) also competed for the Bearcats, placing 35th, 39th, and 47th.
The Bearcats will be back in action on October 2nd to compete in its second meet of the season.
