Softball Downed by IU Southeast in Conference Opener

NEW ALBANY, In. – The Brescia University softball team dropped their conference openers on the road at IU Southeast. The Bearcats move to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in River States Conference play.

Game 1: Grenadiers 4 Bearcats 1

The conference campaign for the Bearcats came up quickly as they faced IU Southeast on the road. IUS got the scoring started early with an RBI single to left field in the bottom of the first. The Grenadiers added three more runs in the bottom of the third and fourth to take the 4-0 lead. A single to shortstop by Berlyn Uken gave the Bearcats a runner in the top of the sixth. Uken got the Bearcat's their first stolen base of the game as she sat in scoring position. A fielder's choice by Zoe Smithson put runners at the corners for the Bearcats as they showed their first scoring threat of the game. The newcomer, Maci Merrit, pulled a ball through the left side to plate the Bearcat's one and only run of the game.

Berlyn Uken went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run as four other Bearcats tallied a hit. Savannah Jones received the loss in the circle to extend her record to 0-2.

Game 2: Grenadiers 8 Bearcats 0

The Grenadiers continued where they left off from game one as they pushed three runs across in the first inning. BU struggled at the plate tallying just three hits in the 8-0 loss to IUS.

Hannah Hailey extended her record to 0-2 in the circle for the Bearcats.

The Bearcats will take the field this Friday, Mar. 7, in Beckley, WV for another RSC double-header at 12pm CT.
