Softball Splits Games with IUPUC
OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Brescia University Softball team advances to 1-5 overall as they split with Indiana University Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC).
Game 1: Bearcats 7 Crimson Pride 0
After two scoreless innings by both teams, the Bearcats would exploit the Crimson Pride defense as Elizabeth Richey would reach first base on an error by the third baseman. Richey would then swipe second base to get herself into scoring position for Madison Ladd. Ladd would reach first base on a throwing error by the shortstop sending the ball into right field as Richey comes around to score the first run for the Bearcats. Zoe Smithson would single up the middle and score Ladd from second to give BU the 2-0 lead before getting thrown out at second base on the throw home. The Bearcats would pick up where they left off in fourth as Mikah Goeppner starts the rally with a single to center field. Kaley Harris would also single to right field to continue the offense for BU. A sacrifice bunt by Savannah Jones would put runners in scoring position as Lindsey Peyton walks to the plate. A walk for Peyton would load the bases for her twin counterpart Courtney Peyton. Peyton would double over the left fielder's head to clear the bases for the Bearcats as they take the 5-0 lead. Ladd would single up the middle for her second hit of the game to score Peyton from second to tack on another run for BU.
Raini Gerometta would keep the Crimson Pride scoreless as Madison Ladd plates one more run for BU as a sacrifice fly scores Courtney Peyton who tripled earlier in the inning. Gerometta pitches a complete game shutout in the circle for the Bearcats as she picks up her first win.
Courtney Peyton and Zoe Smithson each go 3-for-4 with a combined 4 RBIs as the Bearcats outhit the Crimson Pride 11-3.
Game 2: Crimson Pride 5 Bearcats 1
The momentum seemed to shift from the Bearcats to the Crimson Pride as IUPUC strikes first in the first inning. A walk would be the lead runner on first who then moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt. A stolen base would put the lead runner on third base as a single through the right side would plate the first run of the game. The Bearcat offense struggled in the box as the Crimson Pride would score a run in five of the seven innings. BU would score their one and only run in the bottom of the fourth inning as a walk and passed balls would put a runner on third for Hayden Pulliam. Pulliam would bunt down the first base line scoring Katelyn Dykes who pinch ran to score the first run for the Bearcats. BU could not capitalize as they take the loss to IUPUC in game two.
Hannah Hailey picks up her third loss in the circle for the Bearcats. Courtney Peyton finishes game two 2-for-4 with two stolen bases.
The Bearcats take the field Friday, March 10th at home against the visiting Grace College Knights with first pitch starting at 3 pm CT.
