OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Brescia University men's basketball team stayed in conference contention following their Senior Night win against IU Southeast, 84-75. The Bearcats extended their record to 7-16 overall and 5-10 in conference play with a single regular season game to go.
After defeating the Grenadiers earlier in the season, the Bearcats looked to sweep IUS on Senior Night. BU quickly saw a 15-4 deficit as the Grenadiers took advantage in the first five minute of the game. A few turnovers and missed shots, led to a Bearcat 8-2 run to get them within five of the lead. With six minutes to go in the half, Damian Garcia got the Bearcats back on track with seven of BU's next nine points. Mike Caswell knotted the score at 35 following an and-1 opportunity. Linkin Lockhart would extend the Bearcat's lead to five on his shot from deep to end the half.
The Bearcats continued their offense into the second half as they outscored the Grenadiers 13-1 in the first five minutes. Lockhart caught fire at the 12-minute mark putting up nine points in less than a minute to force an IUS timeout. Another and-1 opportunity by John Saenz gave the Bearcats their biggest lead of the night at 24. With a minute left, the Grenadiers worked back within 11 of the lead, but the Bearcat advantage was too much.
Damian Garcia led all scorers with 24 points while adding five boards, eight assists, and five steals. Linkin Lockhart added 20 with four threes while Xavi Tirado added 12 off the bench with seven rebounds.
The Bearcats take on the Mighty Oaks of Oakland City Saturday, Feb. 22, at 12pm for their last regular season contest of the year.
