Baseball Drops Game One Then Avoids Elimination in Game Two
CHILLICOTHE, Oh. – The Brescia University baseball team opened up the first game of the tournament against the #2 seed, Oakland City. The Bearcats fell, 3-2, despite the close matchup. In the double elimination format, BU heads to the loser’s bracket where they faced IU Kokomo and defeated the Cougars, 12-9, in comeback fashion.

Game 1: Bearcats 2 Oakland City 2
Both teams remained scoreless until each of them pushed a singular run across home plate in the second inning. Chase Christie brought in Michael Ascsensio on his stand up double. Oakland City answered back in the bottom of the second and then snatched the lead in the bottom of the third. The Bearcats saw the margin stretch to two as the Mighty Oaks grab another run in the sixth. As the away team, BU had one last chance in the ninth. Hayden Jones cut the deficit to one on his home run shot to left field. The offense fell flat as the Bearcats took the 3-2 loss to Oakland City.
Game 2: Bearcats 12 IU Kokomo 9
Following the elimination game, the Bearcats were set to play IU Kokomo in day two of the tournament. BU struck first in the opening frame on an Ascencio ground ball. The Cougars pounced back with four runs in the next two innings. A solo shot by Max Johnson cut the deficit in half as the pitching staff for the Bearcats continued to work. Grant Hubener scored Johnson on his double to the left field corner to get within one of the lead. The Cougars put up another four runs over the sixth and seventh innings as the IUK momentum looked to be drastic. The Bearcats fought back and ran up the scoreboard with seven runs in the seventh to take their first advantage since the first inning.
Offensive Notes:
- Joseph Massa led the big inning with a single and was responsible for two of the Bearcat runs down the stretch. Also had a home run in the eighth inning.
- Grant Huebner tripled to right field to add two more runs and get the Bearcats within two of the lead.
- Another Ascencio hit scored another run for BU
- Connor Mitchuson came up clutch with just his second home run of the year to put BU on top.
- Bearcats added two more on the Massa home run and Ascencio sacrifice fly in the eighth to secure the win.
The Bearcats make it to the next elimination game where they face off again against Oakland City.
