Baseball Clinches Playoff Spot; Splits with Midway on Day One
OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Brescia University baseball team split the opening doubleheader with Midway with final scores of 6-7 and 24-10. A win tomorrow will determine who secures the 5th seed in the conference tournament. The Bearcats improved their record to 23-16 overall and 11-12 in RSC play.

OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Brescia University baseball team split the opening doubleheader with Midway with final scores of 6-7 and 24-10. A win tomorrow will determine who secures the 5th seed in the conference tournament. The Bearcats improved their record to 23-16 overall and 11-12 in RSC play.
Game one: Midway 7 Bearcats 6
The Eagles jumped out early with two runs in the top of the first. The BU offense was able to cut the lead in half with a groundout RBI by Bryce Gamble. Gamble tabbed three more RBIs to his big day with a deep shot to left field for a three-run homer. Despite the Eagles pushing another run in the fourth, Gavin Huebner got the run back with his home run to left field, giving the Bearcats a two-run lead. Midway knotted the score in the sixth and eventually took the lead in the seventh. A bases loaded error by the Midway defense allowed the tying run to score for the Bearcats going into the eighth inning. The Bearcats couldn't rally in the bottom of the ninth as Midway took game one, 7-6.
Huebner went 3-4 with a double and a home run in the leadoff spot as Gamble cranks out four RBIs, a home run, and a walk. Cayden Crabtree earned the loss to extend his record to 1-2 on the bump.
Game two: Bearcats 24 Midway 10
Another back-and-forth game led to an offensive explosion by the Bearcats to end the contest. A two-run shot by the Eagles put them up 2-0 to start the first. The second of the six total home runs in this game came off the bat of Griffin Taylor to give BU a 3-2 advantage. The Eagles countered with a three-run second of their own to take back the lead. Down two, Huebner smashed a grand slam to left center to put the Bearcats up four. BU strung together two more runs to end the fourth. Midway never conceded as they tied the match yet again with three runs over two innings. The Bearcats erupted in the bottom of the six scoring 14 runs for their biggest margin of victory this season.
Multiple Bearcats had a multi-hit game as BU put up 24 runs in six innings. Jonny Foti earned his first win on the bump.
The Bearcats will finish the series tomorrow afternoon at 12pm against the Eagles for the end of their regular season.
