Bearcats Baseball Takes Conference Series
Owensboro, KY---In a key conference matchup with Midway University, the Brescia Bearcats baseball team won the first two games out of the three game series played Sunday and Monday. Brescia came into the series 3-3 in conference and 3-13 overall. Midway came into the series 5-0 in conference and 6-7 overall.
Game 1 Result: Brescia Wins 13-10
The Brescia Bearcats bested Midway in a high-scoring affair, 13-10.
Brescia got things started in the first inning scoring one run as Alejandro Hernandez singled. The Bearcats then notched six runs in the second inning as Jacob Upshaw, Mark Liberato, and Trejen Fox-Birdwell each had RBIs in the big inning.
Wyatt Griskey started the game for the Bearcats lasting three innings, allowing three hits and four runs while striking out two. Tyler Milby got the win for Brescia. The right-hander went four innings, allowing five runs on three hits and striking out six. Fox-Birdwell threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.
Anibal Salado took the loss for Midway surrendering eight runs on five hits over one and two-thirds innings, striking out two.
John Benevolent got the Bearcats offense going in the first inning with a home run and finished the game 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Brescia totaled 11 hits in the game. Trejen Fox-Birdwell, John Benevolent, Kyle Taylor, and Jacob Upshaw all collected multiple hits for Brescia. Upshaw, Taylor, Benevolent, and Fox-Birdwell each managed two hits to lead the offense in game 1.
Game 2 Result: Brescia Wins 9-8
A walk-off sacrifice fly delivered by Alejandro Hernandez propelled Brescia to a decisive, dramatic victory over Midway, 9-8 in extra innings.
After Midway scored six runs in the second inning and scored another run in the top of the third, Brescia answered with one of their own in the bottom of the 3rd inning. The visiting Eagles of Midway led 7 to 2 going into the bottom of the 7th and final inning when Brescia made a thrilling comeback. The excitement began with a home run by Brescia's own Tyler Milby and culminated in a 5-run inning and a tied score leading to extra innings. The Bearcats' offense in the inning was led by Tyler Milby, Wyatt Griskey, Alejandro Hernandez, and Trejen Fox-Birdwell, all driving in runs in the inning. Midway responded with a home run of their own in the top of the 8th inning to take back the lead 8-7, before the Bearcats would retire the side and go on to win in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the 8th inning.
Tommy Clark started the game for Brescia lasting one and two-thirds innings, allowing six hits and six runs while striking out two and walking one. Manning Webb pitched the Bearcats to victory. The southpaw allowed zero hits and zero runs over one inning, striking out one and walking zero. Kevin Foster, Michael Corrigan, and Preston Hendershot all put in work in relief out of the bullpen, steering their team towards the victory.
Noah Marion took the loss for Midway. He went one inning, allowing five runs on four hits and striking out one.
Offensively the Bearcats tallied 12 hits. Mark Liberato, Wyatt Griskey, and Jacob Upshaw each managed multiple hits with Griskey and Liberato each collecting three hits to lead the team.
Game 3 Result: Midway Wins 16-6
Both Midway and Brescia had the offense going on Monday, but the Bearcats eventually succumbed 16-6 in the high-scoring affair.
After allowing an early 2 run lead to Midway, the Bearcats recaptured the lead in the first inning going up 3-2 by scoring on a single from Hunter Canada. In the top of the 3rd inning the lead swung back in Midway's favor. After the Eagles scored 2 more runs to put the score at 4-3 the Bearcats responded again to tie the game 4-4. Shortly after, Midway took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth inning, and finished the game with a final score of 16-6.
Mitchell Kreidenweis earned the win for Midway. He went five innings, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out five.
Carlos Rivera took the loss for Brescia Bearcats Varsity. The lefty lasted four innings, allowing one hit and seven runs while striking out two.
Brescia scattered six hits in the game including a home run by Hunter Canada in the seventh inning. Canada and Alejandro Hernandez each had multiple hits for Brescia in the effort.
The Brescia Bearcats now stand 5-4 in conference and 5-14 overall. Next up, they are scheduled to play a nonconference home game against Lindsey Wilson College Tuesday at 4pm.
